Biography
I have worked as an applied entomologist for over 40 years conducting research on insects in various natural and agricultural systems. My research focuses on Integrated Pest Management, the spatio-temporal distribution of insect pests and the application of various tools to investigate these topics. I have an extensive extension program, facilitating stakeholder involvement in several research projects. Being located at a Research & Outreach Center proximal to the Crookston campus of the U of MN, I conduct most of my teaching there but have offered distance courses to both the Twin Cities campuses and other locations using a variety of distance learning communications systems.

Research
While responsible for multiple cropping systems in NW Minnesota, I focus efforts on the pests of commercial and seed potato production. Consequently, my current work tends to investigate the management and spatial resistance patterns in Colorado Potato Beetle and the management and within season spatial distribution of aphid vectors of Potato Virus Y in seed production areas.
Outreach
My position includes a large Extension appointment, allowing me to work closely with the stakeholders of my research. Since arriving at UMN, I have provided extension/outreach materials and presentations on small grains, oilseed crops, sugar beets, soybeans, wild rice, and potatoes. I have found that working directly with the people who will benefit from research provides both valued insight and guidance. An example of the importance of stakeholder support is the ongoing cooperative project monitoring the within-season spatio-temporal distribution of aphid vectors of Potato Virus Y in MN and ND (the Aphid Alert Network, see: aphidalert.blogspot.com).
