Mary Rogers

My research centers on advancing sustainable and organic horticultural systems through ecological and participatory innovation. As a horticultural entomologist, I focus on integrated pest management (IPM), plant–insect interactions, and biological and environmental strategies to support organic production of fruits and vegetables in the Upper Midwest. I aim to reduce reliance on conventional pesticides by enhancing biological suppression of insect pests, employing cultural tactics that promote plant resilience, and optimizing practices to improve crop quality while minimizing pest pressure.

My program emphasizes participatory and urban agriculture models, integrating community engagement, education, and curriculum development. This work spans outreach in local and organic food systems and experiential learning initiatives for students, all of which strengthen sustainable food systems through collaboration.

Through interdisciplinary and applied research, I strive to build resilient, equitable, and environmentally responsible horticultural systems that serve growers, communities, and ecosystems alike.

Outreach

My Extension program in Urban Horticulture and Food Systems supports beginning and emerging growers in producing specialty crops for local and organic markets. I focus on integrated pest management, sustainable production practices, and urban food systems, with an emphasis on community and market gardens.
